Portable projectors from Sony

Sony Electronics Inc. today showcased a range of simple-to-use, executive-style, portable projectors for high-brightness image display, each equipped to provide "push-button" operation and digital connectivity.

Here at COMDEX, Sony hand carried in four mobile business projectors - the VPD-MX10, VPL-CS4, VPL-CX4 and the Sony VPL-CX11 projector models -- which mobile professionals can now pick up from authorized resellers.

Designed to meet the rigors and performance demands of road shows and in-house presentations, these lightweight models feature: whisper-quiet operation; a broad range in brightness from 1000 to 1500 ANSI lumens; and a full set of handy features including USB-compatibility for optimum use and display.

"Our new SuperLite™ projectors are focused on elevating multimedia presentations beyond the ordinary display with visual impact so that presenters leave their best impression with an audience," said Rob Meakin, marketing manager for the Display Systems Division of Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Professional Company. "With our latest displays, we're offering a fleet of projectors suited to fit virtually ever customer's display needs and at prices to accommodate their budget."

In the micro-portable class (units weighing under 6.6 pounds*), Sony has added the VPD-MX10, VPL-CS4 and VPL-CX4 digital projectors to the portfolio.

The lightest new entry from Sony is the VPD-MX10 digital projector at 4.6 pounds, roughly the footprint of a notebook PC. The ultra-mobile VPD-MX10 projector incorporates Digital Light Processing™ technology from Texas Instruments, which is capable of displaying high-contrast images on a viewable area, measured diagonally, of 200 inches. The unit features XGA resolution (1024 x 768 pixels) and 1000 ANSI lumens. It also includes a Memory Stick® media port, a DVI interface for direct digital connectivity to a PC and Sony's Projector Station™ software for direct hands-on control of image features and inputs via a notebook PC.

In addition, Projector Station software makes it possible to "drag-and-drop" files directly from the notebook PC to Memory Stick media, converting PowerPoint® presentations to JPEG files. By importing presentations or image files directly into the Memory Stick slot in the projector, users can then display the presentation or digital file without the use of a PC, thus lightening the load when traveling.

Memory Stick media holds any digital file, including audio files such as voice files and music, pictures, MPEG videos, graphics, and presentations. In combination with the new projector, Memory Stick media simplifies the process of preparing and giving presentations. Offering up to 128 MB of capacity, Memory Stick media stores and transfers large presentation files and graphics quickly and easily.

USB-compatible, the VPD-MX10 projector also includes other features such as digital keystone correction and a built-in scan converter, which accepts a variety of input signals including composite video, component video and RGB video, as well as PC signals up to SXGA.

The Sony VPD-MX10 projector with Memory Stick technology is now available at a suggested list price of $4,500.

Sony also introduced two other micro-portable units for the mobile professional -- the VPL-CS4 and VPL-CX4 projectors for small- to mid-size meeting rooms and spaces.

The VPL-CS4 unit features 1000 ANSI lumens high brightness and SVGA (800 x 600) resolution. Another avenue for high quality image display is the new Sony VPL-CX4 projector, which also features 1000 ANSI lumens brightness and XGA (1024 x 768) resolution and accepts composite video, component video and RGB video input signals. These projectors can display high contrast images on a viewable area, measured diagonally, from 40 to 150 inches.

Both the VPL-CS4 and VPL-CX4 models feature 0.7-inch three-panel LCD chips. These 5.5 pound units also include: twin speakers; a front exhaust fan to blow air away from the audience; digital keystone correction; and four times digital zoom. While the VPL-CX4 projector also adds point-and-click control of an USB-connected computer via remote control.

From a design point-of-view, the projectors also feature a unique flip-top control panel that retracts over the front enclosure, safeguarding the lens, speakers and controls while in transit.

The VPL-CS4 projector is priced to move with a suggested list price of about $2,250, while the VPL-CX4 projector sells for a suggested list price of about $3,700. Both projectors are now available.

In the portable category (classified as units weighing 6.7 to 11 pounds**), Sony also introduced the VPL-CX11 projector, which weighs 7.4 pounds.

Designed for larger conference and meetings rooms, this mobile projector is able to rest on a table top, can be mounted to a ceiling, or used in rear-projection settings.

This 0.9-inch LCD panel-based system heads up the class in terms of brightness with a rating of 1500 ANSI lumens output. The VPL-CX11 projector provides true XGA (1024 x 768) resolution and is USB-ready for daisychain connection to multiple devices. Unique to the VPL-CX11 model is the projector's ability to display all video formats worldwide out-of-the-box on a viewable area up to 300 inches.

Another added feature is the ability to organize presentation materials; change display settings; and launch files and presentation files -- all directly from a user's notebook PC -- using the bundled Projector Station software.

The VPL-CX11 projector is available now for a suggested list price of about $4,700.
